Hilton Cincinnati Netherlands Hotel, Salon F

In attendance: Colorado President-elect Joan Sawyer, Colorado President Alejandro Cremaschi, Iowa President Alan Huckleberry, Kansas President Sally Buxton, Minnesota President Jill Kilzer, Minnesota President-elect Suzanne Greer, Missouri President Cathy Benton, Nebraska President Linda Christiansen, North Dakota President Beth Gigante Klingenstein, MTNA Foundation Chair Thomas Ediger (Nebraska), West Central Division Director Timothy Shook (Kansas), West Central Division Director-elect Suzanne Torkelson (Iowa)

Adoption of Agenda

Director Timothy Shook called the meeting to order and introductions were made.  A motion to adopt the agenda (Benton, Kilzer) was approved.

Approval of Minutes

Minutes from March 10, 2013 Anaheim, California National Conference were approved (Huckleberry, Buxton) with two corrections: correct misspelling of Charlotte Herman to Charlotte Heerman, and correct misspelling of Joyce Mueller to Joyce Miller.

Division Officer Reports

WCD Director Timothy Shook gave his report (on file), expressing his appreciation for the opportunity to serve the division as director.  In addition to a review of his goals and activities as director, he reported on decisions the national board has made and answered questions from those in attendance.

WCD Director-elect Suzanne Torkelson reported on the activities of the national Membership Committee and filed a report of activities and decisions made since the last WCD meeting.

WCD Certification Commissioner Marianne Bryan sent a report which was read and filed. During the reading of the certification report, MTNA President Ken Christiansen stepped into the room and reported that MTNA now has reached 16% of the membership certified, 1.5% higher than last year.

MTNA Foundation Chair Thomas Ediger reported on the activities the MTNA Foundation, and shared ideas for sponsoring Foundation Fellows, establishing Legacy Society memberships, and continuing the efforts of the Foundation.  Discussion followed on the possibility of creating videos to put a face with the name of those who have benefitted from Foundation awards.  It was agreed that state presidents will take this information back to states and encourage members to support the certification and Foundation efforts of MTNA.

Old Business

It was announced that the 2013-2014 West Central Division MTNA Competitions will be held at Drake University on January 10-12, with Clarence Padilla and Nicholas Roth of Drake University serving as local co-chairs.  A .pdf file with WCD competition details, housing options and maps will be found as portal on the MTNA competition website.  Announcement was also made of the date and location for the 2014-2015 WCD MTNA Competitions.

New Business

Director Shook presented the rotation for upcoming WCD competitions which has been altered slightly to accommodate location availability.  State presidents are requested to supply him with a list of possible locations willing to host the competitions for future scheduling.  Although the original rotation of states is still being followed, adjustments will need to be made as suitable locations are available or unavailable.  Linda Stump, national chair for MTNA Competitions, stepped into the meeting and notified state presidents of the correspondence and web links she has provided to them.

State President Reports

State presidents gave highlights of reports on state activities they had submitted to be placed on record with Director Shook.

In closing, Shook encouraged those in attendance to take the new requirements for FTC compliance to states and local associations in order to begin work before the certifying deadline nears.  It is important to remember the clear differentiation between “association” and “individual.”  Beth Gigante Klingenstein stressed the importance of sharing business issues with new and continuing teachers and her hope that FTC compliance will not mean that we are backing away from issues that are pertinent to teachers and the business of teaching.  Director Shook assured the group that he is willing to help in any way he can and asked that states begin reviewing printed and web materials early.  The meeting was adjourned (Huckleberry, Cremaschi) at 5:15.

Respectfully submitted,

Suzanne Torkelson, NCTM, WCD Director-elect
